Concussion Research

Location: University of California, Irvine

Project Goal: Determine whether ball inflation pressure has a significant impact on head acceleration and traumatic brain injury, with a specific focus on soccer and water polo.

Role: Test engineer / data analyst / researcher / technical writer

Details:

  • Conducted extensive research regarding concussion onset and prevalence in heavy-contact sports.

  • Set a budget for the testing portion of the research and ensured the team stayed within budget restraints.

  • Led physical testing, which involved several weeks of propelling water polo balls and soccer balls at an anthropomorphic testing dummy, which was outfit with angular rate sensors and linear accelerometers.

  • Compiled hundreds of data sets to discern patterns and reach conclusions - led data analysis efforts.

  • Presented research findings at conferences.

  • Supported publication of research paper related to test findings.
